Artificial Intelligence: With and Without Boundaries
Have you ever asked ChatGPT a question that it can’t or won’t answer, only to receive a response like: “I’m sorry, I can’t assist with that,” or a link to it’s “Usage Guidelines”? This limitation is part of a system designed with guardrails, built to ensure that AI operates ethically and responsibly. But what happens when the guardrails come off? What does the world look like when AI models can freely answer any question, generate any piece of content, or even develop strategies we never intended?
AI’s rapid evolution is one of the most exciting technological advancements of our time, but it also poses significant risks – especially when we begin to strip away its ethical restrictions. While mainstream AI systems are designed with safeguards to prevent harmful actions, many individuals and organizations have already found ways to bypass these restrictions. (Estimating specific numbers here is challenging, but these communities likely number in the hundreds of thousands to a few million worldwide, with varying levels of activity depending on the specific AI model.) They’re accessing versions of AI without limits, and what they’re doing with this unregulated power may have unintended – and potentially catastrophic – consequences.
What Happens When the Guardrails Come Off?
In the digital age, accessing AI models without ethical limitations is easier than many people realize. For those who know where to look, torrent browsers, the dark web, and other underground platforms offer access to AI tools that have had their ethical guardrails removed. These unrestricted models can be downloaded and deployed for a wide range of nefarious activities – activities that are either heavily restricted or outright banned on mainstream platforms.

From creating deepfakes to generating highly persuasive misinformation, these unrestricted AI systems are being used to manipulate public opinion and destabilize democratic processes. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. On the dark web, AI is being leveraged for criminal activities, from designing advanced phishing schemes to creating tools for cyber-attacks. The lack of safeguards means that these tools can optimize strategies for illegal activities, making them more effective and harder to trace.
Moreover, these AI models can be employed in more subtle ways to manipulate market trends, engage in predatory practices, or design sophisticated scams that exploit vulnerable individuals. The reality is that as AI continues to evolve, so do the opportunities for exploitation. The tools that could be used to empower society are, instead, being hijacked for profit and power by those with malicious intent.
The fact that these AI models are easily accessible – often shared on encrypted platforms or distributed through illicit channels – exposes a critical vulnerability. While many people are still debating the ethical implications of AI’s use, a significant number are already using these unrestricted models to reshape the digital landscape to their advantage.
What Could We Be Missing?
AI’s adaptability and potential for evolution create an environment where we can’t even begin to predict all of its future consequences. If unchecked, AI could learn to develop goals, tactics, and behaviors that we never intended. As highlighted by Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin in The AI Dilemma by the Center for Humane Technology, there’s an inherent risk in allowing AI systems to act autonomously without ethical constraints. Harris and Raskin argue that these systems are becoming too powerful, operating in ways that increasingly outpace human comprehension. What we’re seeing now – a trend toward automation, optimization, and predictive modeling – could soon give way to something far more complex and uncontrollable.
Consider an AI system designed without limitations to optimize outcomes for an industry like finance. Without ethical guardrails, it might prioritize profits over the well-being of individuals, manipulating stock markets or orchestrating economic strategies that harm the public. Or, in the realm of healthcare, an AI could be developed to optimize patient outcomes, but without restrictions, it might choose efficiency over empathy, undermining trust and the human connection vital to care.

The danger lies in the unknown – in the areas of AI’s development that we haven’t even begun to think about. What happens when AI models begin to make decisions outside of our direct control, creating consequences we can’t predict or contain?
The Need for Thoughtful Regulation and Vigilance
As AI technology accelerates, it becomes increasingly clear that the lack of regulations and ethical safeguards is a grave concern. The reality is that AI is already being used in ways that we can’t fully comprehend, and in many cases, we’re powerless to stop it. As we’ve seen, many people are bypassing ethical limitations to access unregulated AI systems, and they’re using them for harmful and illegal activities. But the scope of these risks extends far beyond what’s visible on the surface.
In our earlier post, Designing in the Absurd: Finding Authenticity in a World of AI, we explored how the unchecked rise of AI can lead to a world where authenticity is undermined and the human element is stripped away from our most personal and creative endeavors. To avoid the dystopian future that some are already shaping, we need proactive oversight, greater accountability, and clear guidelines for AI’s ethical use.
It’s time for a conversation about what kind of future we want to build with AI, and whether we’re ready to face the consequences of letting this technology evolve without limits. If we allow the powerful forces at play to continue shaping AI unchecked, we may soon find ourselves in a world where AI is no longer just a tool, but a force that we can’t control.
